Wildlife Fund Thailand Under The Royal Patronage of Her Majesty The Queen (WFT) was established on October 13th, 1983 by Dr. Boonsong Lekagul, the pioneer of the nature conservation movement in Thailand. The organization has been graciously accepted under the Royal Patronage of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother.
Wildlife Fund Thailand (WFT) is registered as a non-governmental organization under the category of conservation of the environment and natural resources, article 7 of the Promotion and Conservation of National Environment Quality Act, B.E. 2535. Donations to WFT are tax-deductible.
During the first decade, WFT focused its attention on raising conservation awareness among the media, government officials and donors, by way of conducting “Conservation Field Trip (CFT)” to national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. The experience gained from CFT led us to the next important step, which was to organize conservation projects together with local communities in or around environmentally sensitive areas with the intention to create “friendly human fences” to help protect natural resources for their own livelihood and well-being.
Today the general public is well aware of the need to conserve and protect natural resources, the internet and social media make it possible for anyone interested, to be able to become “eyes & ears” of the conservation movement. However, there are still major battles to be dealt with, which are mega projects such as large dams, development in the natural areas which are detrimental to the biological diversity as well as the functioning natural systems. To succeed in conservation, we need to treat the earth as a living superorganism.
Today WFT concentrates its efforts on preserving or threatened our endangered species, and rehabilitating degraded habitats, under the motto “Nature lives, Nation lives.”
